“Powerpoint slides are like children: no matter how ugly they are, you’ll think they’re beautiful if they’re yours” — Scott Adams, author of the comic strip “Dilbert”. Due to this cause or another, it’s a huge stress to look at most Powerpoint slides. Depending on the “design” skills of the speaker and audience’s taste slides create different emotions from a slight annoyance to physical sickness.

But that is not the worst thing. The worst thing is that instead of improving the presentation such slides confuse the audience, distract it and finally oblige the speaker to explain them rather than being quite self-explanatory.

The goal of this course is to change that by equipping learners with a set of tools to create simple, clear and aesthetic slides which improve the presentation of the speaker. The course covers universal design principles, templates, colors, typefaces, slides’ typography, use of photos and pictograms, composition rules and ways to create clear and meaningful charts and diagrams.

This course is not a PowerPoint fundamentals course. You should have a basic knowledge of either Microsoft PowerPoint or Apple Keynote software.

Don’t meddle, make your slides matter.

Syllabus

Part 1: Key principles of design
This week is about key principles of slide design. Non-designers usually can’t tell a good slide from a mediocre one. If they could we wouldn’t have had so many bad slides all around us. So this week we are going to fix this by learning the key principles of slide design.

Part 2: Templates and colors meaning
This week is about templates, colors and fonts. What's wrong with most templates? Which page decorations should you use to make your slide look beautiful? (None!) What information can we pass through the colors? How to choose a typeface? Does a proper typeface make all the difference? (Yes, it does).

Part 3: Typography and photographic illustrations
This module is about typography and photographic illustrations. Applying basic typography rules allows making decent looking slides only with text. The same goes to tables. If that’s not enough there are icons — do’s and don’ts of them when you try to spruce up your text-only slides. And finally using photos and vector arts to create really gorgeous stunning slides. Basic rules on how to search them on photo banks, how to combine them with text, when icons should be used instead of photos and vice versa.

Part 4: Diagrams and data visualization
This week is about typography and photographic illustrations. Applying basic typography rules allows to make decent looking slides only with text. The same goes to tables. If that’s not enough there are icons — do’s and don’ts of them when you try to spruce up your text-only slides. And finally using photos and vector arts to create really gorgeous stunning slides. Basic rules on how to search them on photobanks, how to combine them with text, when icons should be used instead of photos and vice versa.

Excellent course. Probably the best designed course I've taken on Coursera and I've taken a lot of them. The presentations are interesting, entertaining but very educational. The quiz at the end of each chapter is not a push-over quiz, you actually have to go through the material to pass it, and finally the practice assignments are a real way to apply what you learned so you just aren't learning it academically but you put it into practice so the learning is real! Thank you so much for producing this course I greatly appreciate the amount of effort it must have taken to put this together so well.

Well I think that it's an appropiate course for those who already know how to make presentations in any software, and are looking for new ideas to improve their slides. The teacher explains each topic in an easy way to understand and use some examples to clarify. In my experience I really learned some technics to improve my presentations, because let's say it, mine were old too fashioned. I strongly recommend this course to anyone, and I just would like to say that the quizzes must be a little shorter. Thanks very much.

fantastic course, great presentor. I wish I had been able to take that course at the start of my career, 30 years ago.

What I like most about the course is how the presentor develops a typical ugly slide into something appealing in a step-by-step approach.

Interestingly, most of the steps are about REMOVING, not adding elements, such as color, decoration and so forth.

Highly recommended for anyone who has to produce, present or look at slides.

As the teacher said at the beginning, this class doesn't require the ability of design, which is wonderful for a beginner as me who wants to make good slides but have no idea what to do.

In this class I do learn a lot. And I especially like the teacher's example slide from a bad one to a good one, and the bad one is often one we would make before. Many many thanks to the teacher for giving this awesome class!

In hindsight (this is one of the new instances I learned on this course) I can say it was easy but if you really take a look at it, the course is for sensible, logical and quite smart people.

I liked the organisation of the course, it is structured well and you can see how the difficulty rises as you do quizzes. But that didn't stop me. As soon as I finish the course, I can boast about my achievement.

I really appreciate that the course is practical, giving concrete examples of how to improve slides and many useful hints without too much theory. The main principles are repeated, the lecturer is very clear and structured. Only some of the quizzes are a bit too long for my taste and it is not easy to reach 80% to able to complete it. Thanks a lot to coursera for providing this course!

Excellent course about designing slides and data visualisation.

Alexei is clear, concise and give great examples.

Honestly, I was so bad with Powerpoint and today I'm still not that good but I improved a lot.

I'm not a creative guy but advices provided are great so at the end, I'm satisfied with my work.

One of the most useful and concrete course I've studied on Coursera.

A lot of instruction and guide inside and examples are very convective, even step by step. The course is really helpful for people who want to improve the skill to design a slide.

Three questions are mentioned again and again:

1. Why we need this (some items on the slide)? Do we really need it?

2. What's it the key message? What's the decision?

3. What can we delete?

it was a great pleasure to participate in this course where I was able to learn techniques for the preparation of presentations, which are already and helping in the presentations that I have to do in my work.

But not only in presentations as everything I do, now I have another look at the result, a more technical and assertive look.

I've taken many slide design courses but never found anything like this. The course contains

a lot more insight than just how to make slide aesthetically beautiful. This course is literally a course on how to effectively communicate through aesthetic design. If I can go back in time, this is the very first course I should take

This was first course and I must say I am fully satisfied. The quizzes and project work made it practical as without that it would have been only theoretical.

The level of depth in explaining how the slides should be designed was quite brilliant. Now I can definitely good slides from bad ones. Slowly i should be able these myself.

I have watched the video's and filled in most of the practice quizes. I think the video's are amazing, fun to watch, and most importantly: my powerpoint slides have improved a lot in very little time. I never knew what was wrong with my slides as they were not text heavy, but now I understand the problem and the solution!

This was my first Coursera course. And i must say I'm off to a great start. I loved this course everybit. I learnt so much about design.

The only problem i had was getting reviews on time. And I think the instructor also needs to review his student's assignments.

Thank you. This course was worth the time.

There are a few drawbacks that I could mention but the good sides outnumber them. So, I could say that this course woul be quite hard for those who don't speak good English. However, the presentor's explanations are quite clear. I liked the course and I'd like to take one more in this series.

An interesting and really useful course. Gave new ideas for making slide presentations better as a student or a professional. It was a little difficult to catch the messages because of the accent. But pre-reading the contents helped me overcome and get everything that was said.

Show me a slide and I'll tell you if a person spent a lot of time on it or not. Everything matters-font, colors, etc. So in this course they teach you how to use them to your advantage and attract attenton of the audience. I enjoyed my studying.

Course gives great insights regarding how to design the slides for better readability and understanding.Only thing that could have been to provide workbooks for every video and let people edit themselves with the help of steps explained in video.

Even though it was quite hard sometimes to catch the material, I got used to the concept and to peer-graded assignments.

I have now developed a different approach in designing slides and this gives me so much advantage. I recommend this course!
