Massive Open Online Course on Marine Litter

Open Universiteit Nederland via Independent

This course may be unavailable.

Overview

Marine litter is a global problem that affects every ocean of the world. Litter is an environmental, human health and socio-economic problem that is a symptom of a highly disposable society. With worldwide growth in the amount of solid litter thrown away every day and slow rates of degradation, the amount of litter present in the marine environment is increasing.

The MOOC on marine litter strives to teach students through action oriented learning how they can apply successful and inspiring activities to their own local context, regardless of their profession or location. The course will present different options and tools to combat marine pollution such as the use of effective and legitimate tools like the Honolulu Strategy. The course will provide examples and case studies that will inspire leadership at all levels, thereby increasing awareness of and stimulating creative solutions to marine litter problems. Moreover, this course will benefit policymakers, practitioners, and managers who wish to connect with other professionals in order to enhance their knowledge of marine litter issues.

this course was extremely interesting and useful to me. It took about 5 hours each week of work to complete and the material was presented in easy-to-understand sections. It provided me with a much more global view of the problem of marine debris and the possible solutions being considered and implemented world-wide. Also, it gave me a view of the scale of the problem.

This in-depth course provides the latest approaches to understanding and reducing the massive problem of global marine pollution. Perhaps 90% of oceanic pollution has come from land-based sources. Consumerism is now the driving force on our planet:…

The Course material was a great collection of contemporary case-studies. The involvement of big actors such as the Dyson company came as a surprise to me and made me aware of the importance of corporate reputation management for environmental awareness tactics. By showcasing the latest technologies in action, many consumers may become more aware of their consumption patterns.
I took the course together with a personal friend who is active for a NGO and by sparring back and forth we learned a great deal about the social sphere and the barriers underlying the adoption of pro-environmental behaviour.

Well, call it enlightening. This is a must if you are interested in our oceans and trying to keep them on track as our main ecosystem service. This class is HARD and requires a lot of time and concentration. It's not all about marine biology or litter You will learn about economics, social issues, targets and impacts. You will be blasted with enough acronyms to fill a ledger. Totally worth it and I would take it again.

I think the course is very good as it addresses all the main issues around marine litter in a clear way and with relevant actors. The only thing that disappointed me was the estimation of time needed to complete it. It took me much more time than it was expected by the organisers (around 3 times more!) and of course, much more than what the certificate reflects.

I loved the course. It is very in depth and I had to dedicate a lot of my time to it, but I believe it was totally worth it. I learnt a lot about the problem, about what is being done and about what I can do to help. Everyone should know about this topic so that we can all prevent litter from affecting our ocean and different environments.

The course had many opportunities for interaction with other online students. The content was well organised, informative and inspirational. Texts, videos and tasks were different methods of teaching that all completed each other. I highly recommend the course to anyone interested in learning more about marine litter and how to tackle the problem.
