Web & Digital Literacies

Varsity College via Open Education by Blackboard

Overview

The Web is an environment where all people, anywhere in the world, have the potential to participate equally. It is a democratic platform that can allow humans to flourish on a scale never before seen. However, to make the most of this opportunity, we need a broad set of skills and competencies to read, write and participate on the Web effectively – these skills and competencies are referred to as Web and digital literacies.
This series of 6 learning units focuses on the above-mentioned Web and digital literacies. It has been designed to start you on your own journey towards digital liberation and participation. Practise is the most important aspect of improving one’s skills, and the activities in this series have been designed to provide you with a range of experiences in order to achieve exactly this.

Overall, this course is of fairly low quality and sloppily executed. While a portion of the information presented may yet be educational to a novice web user, much of the content is heavily outdated and a staggering amount of linked media was no longer available -- I quickly lost track of how many "file not found"s I encountered. (What irony that "reliability" is stressed as an important way to evaluate a website!) This, in addition to spelling and grammar errors, prohibitively detracted from the experience.

Unless given a complete overhaul, I strongly recommend that this course be removed from the catalog at Class Central.
