Overview

This subject is an introduction to the world of chemistry. You will learn about atoms, the building blocks of everything around us. You’ll learn about how these atoms are put together to make compounds, to make most of the materials that we use every day.

We’ll have some fun looking at some common types chemical reactions and finally, we’ll use our knowledge of these chemical reactions along with a new way of quantifying the world in order to be able to make powerful predictions about quantitative chemistry.

What will I learn?

  • Identify different types of matter around you
  • Develop an appreciation for some of the historical milestones in the development of modern chemistry
  • Describe the basic structure of the atom, giving specific details for any given element
  • Develop knowledge of the periodic table and its structure
  • Explain why atoms join together to form different compounds
  • Build and name simple ionic and covalent chemical compounds
  • Read, write, balance and comprehend chemical reactions through the use of chemical equations
  • Predict the solubility behaviour of simple ionic and covalent compounds
  • Recognise common occurrences of acid-base, endothermic, exothermic and combustion reaction
  • Comprehend the mole concept and how it relates to quantification
  • Use the mole concept to be able to calculate masses, volumes, concentrations and the number of individual atoms that make up a given material
  • Combine your understanding of chemical equations and the mole concept to make quantitative predictions regarding the outcome of a chemical reaction

Where could this lead me?

If you're wondering what your future could look like in this area, here are some potential careers you could head towards.

  • Laboratory Technician
  • Analyst
  • Undergraduate
  • Industrial chemist
  • Quality control chemist
  • Research assistant
  • Postgraduate

This was really great introduction to chemistry. I recommend it for anyone who has little to no experience with chemistry. The content was very well structured and Daniel Eldridge does a great job of making all the content accessible and easy to grasp. I found the assessments to be challenging but not so much that I was discouraged by the difficulty. The lectures are clear and concise and well done. I didn't have to go other sources to gain clarification on any of the content, and resources provided were useful and relevent to the course content.

Professor Daniel Eldridge does an excellent job teaching; so good, I wish I could have him as my professor for an upcoming college chemistry class I will be taking this fall at a local community college. The class was well taught, and provided good insights into chemistry, and provided an excellent tool belt for which to solve chemistry problems.

It was a great course. If you want to begin learning about chemistry or if you have difficulties with it this is an excellent course. On the other hand, if you already know chemistry and want something more challenge, then search in other course, because this is going to be too easy for you.

In my personal experience I like it a lot. Now, I can move forward to more difficult classes.

The lecture covers the basic topics of chemistry, and it's a great way to recap what I have learnt about chemistry in high school. The lecturer sometimes shares some cold jokes, funny huh?
