Overview

From the surface of Mars to your living room floor, mobile robots can be found in some surprising places. Together we’ll explore how and why. We’ll look at how robots move, how they sense the world around them and how they make decisions. Then we’ll put all this together and apply what we’ve learned to build our own mobile robot.

What will I learn?
  • What is, and what is not a robot – and more specifically, a mobile robot
  • Why we need robots
  • What subsystems robots are made up of
  • Different ways that mobile robots can move themselves around, and which are most suitable for different environments
  • How a variety of sensors receive information about the environment around then
  • Ways to classify sensors: proprioceptive vs exteroceptive; active vs passive
  • How a feedback system works • That robots follow logical sequential instructions in order to function
  • To create basic flow diagrams and pseudo code to program what a robot will do
  • How to develop a list of design requirements for a robotic system
  • How to design, implement and troubleshoot a robotic system
Where could this lead me?

If you're wondering what your future could look like in this area, here are some potential careers you could head towards.

  • Mechatronics Engineer
  • Computer Scientist
  • Electrical Engineer
  • Mechanical Engineer
  • Software Engineer

Good intro for beginners. I already knew the basics of microcontrollers programming, so the course was too easy for me, but I found some new terms and information too.
  • I didn't know anything about robotics before taking this course.I thought of giving it a try and it turned out to be wonderful.
The lectures are interesting and good examples add to their merit. The contents of the course were well explained. The quiz at the end of each video lectures drives the point of the lesson home.
The additional resources section is an added advantage and has interesting extensions of the course topics.
If you want to learn robotics and don't know where to start, this is the perfect course..

    Introductory course.
Good for people without a background in robotics.
    Not for pro's.
    I enjoyed the course.
The presenter tries to enable a novice to understand how the robot works, and that effort is really successful. Even if you've no background in the sciences, it's a great way to learn about robotics.

This is an entry level course. If you are used to university level courses, you will find it too easy. However, the teacher is great and clear, and you may learn a few useful concepts.
