Kadenze: Introduction to Graphic Illustration

 with  Junichi Tsuneoka

In today’s diverse consumer market, illustration exists through many forms of expression breaking with traditional roles of the illustrator. Through a series of projects, students will explore the translation, production and distribution of their visual ideas. Through the integration of design principles and drawing skills, students gain an opportunity to discover new possibilities for illustrated visual expression in the market.

A student should have basic drawing skills, basic digital tool skills (Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop) and understanding in fundamental design theory, in order to take this class.

Syllabus

Session 1: General Project Process
Session 2: What Is Good Illustration?
How do you achieve originality? A good illustration should communicate the right message to the right audience. This session will focus on graphic design principles that make illustration effective for communication. We will also look at artistic expression—your illustration should show your passion!
Session 3: Stylization Tips
This session will explore principles of Consistency vs. Randomness: The effective image should have consistency in quality as “unity” to be effective. The effective image should also have unexpected quality otherwise it becomes a “predictable image.”
Session 4: Compositional Study
In this lecture, using design principals, I will explain different ways to achieve effective composition in illustration.
Session 5: Digital Tools Demos
This session will offer several tutorials in Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign, covering basic to advanced techniques for professionally presentable images, including cover some of the most useful functions to create an image.
Session 6: Projects
This session will focus on hand-drawn typography using illustration/illustrative typography. Illustrative poster. Illustrative trade ad using a product photo.

Even though the course was an audited class, I feel we should be allowed to post and get feedback.

Really enjoying this course. I do not know how to use Illustrator so I needed to look on YouTube to get caught up with this course. Looking forward to making a poster for my show using the skills in this course.

The first lectures give you simple and actionable tips on how to create an engaging and aesthetically pleasing visual, even if you don't consider yourself an advanced visual artist. Overall, you'll leave with a bunch of ideas of how to practice your skills in conveying a certain idea or story through an image.

Excellent course! Highly recommended. As an artist with over 20 years experience, I found Mr. Junichi Tsuneoka's style of art refreshing. Can help to relax and break up the rigidity of being stuck on photorealism artwork.

This was a a great way for me to start my design career. I always wanted to take these type of courses in Uni, but never had the time in my schedule. Great to learn about Cornish and how they teach this subject. Also took a class from MICA at the same time on Kadenze. Both courses were very high quality.
