Canvas Network: Intro to Permaculture Design

In this free, online course, you’ll learn about the process, ethics, and principles of permaculture while diving into climate-specific design elements through interactive technology, videos, graphics, and readings. Permaculture design is a method of landscape planning that can be applied to anything, from a home garden or farm to a city block or entire village. Permaculture uses design principles from nature itself and takes into account such things as how indigenous people used the land. This course is designed to benefit everyone regardless of learning style, time commitments, or available technology. Expect to spend between two to four hours each week on coursework.

OBJECTIVES

  • Define what the permaculture design system is, as well as its ethics and principles.
  • Organize the order of the permaculture design process.
  • Diagram elements of watershed, sector, and zone maps.
  • Identify design elements appropriate for each climate.

I took this course in the spring of 2016 after buying a house in a rural, coastal town on a hillside in a region with over 60 inches of rain per year. I learned so much and spent more like 4 to 6 hours perday keeping up with all of the videos and reading. I'm not the fastest reader and was totally absorbed and overwhelmed by all of the information. I made a plan for my property and have so many projects slowly progressing to alleviate drainage, soil and waste energy and water problems involved with a 100 year old house and a yard overgrown with English ivy and concrete driveway and courtyard. I'd love to take the course again and plan on it, perhaps in the fall? I'm hoping the software for the course work has been improved, but other than that THIS IS AN AMAZING COURSE.! I've purchased several of the recommended books and subscribed to several journals and related podcasts. There is a wealth of information and how to's and resources made available thru the course. I feel like I can walk into any landscape and evaluate what is needed to help restore it to fertility and productivity. A diverse and abundant landscape is achievable most anywhere by working with nature and understanding the needs of the life and energies available in a given place and situation.

I completed this course in May. It was focused and well structured. The course introduced and defined the ethics and principles which are the framework of permaculture design. It provided a wealth of information and training in the permaculture design process across the broad climate categories of drylands, temperate and tropical. There was 'hands-on' instruction in the use of mapping applications, and the design process which built from week to week could be tailored and applied to our own sites, be they urban or rural; balcony, garden or farm. There were a few minor technical problems at the beginning but these were sorted out fairly quickly and were more related to Canvas technologies than the university. The lectures were well presented and discussion groups helpful and supportive with interaction between students and lecturers. I thoroughly enjoyed this course and would recommend it to anyone interested in permaculture.

I really enjoyed this class and I felt like I learned a lot. I found the recorded lectures to be easy to understand, of good/appropriate length, and well executed. The software tools they introduced students to during projects were very interesting and it was cool to pick a piece of land and see the concepts in motion. The "extra" articles and tools were thoughtfully chosen and added extra dimension to the course. I found that I did have to be serious about setting aside a good chunk of time each week to dedicate to this course. I personally would have liked a self-paced version. If you're thinking about taking this course, I would highly recommend it.

Loved this class, bummed that the ratings are artificially low due to technical issues. I have taken it twice; first time didn't complete due to insufficient time (mine), second time reveled in the work. Loved this class, bummed that the ratings are artificially low due to technical issues. I have taken it twice; first time didn't complete due to insufficient time (mine), second time reveled in the work. Learned so much, and am starting to implement the specific plans I developed at my new home. Planning to take again this session and further clarify. Needs to be taken with a class rather than alone as some of my best input came from classmates in a similar microclimate commenting on my work, or my reviews of their work. The supplemental websites and video were valuable, and you could partake as much as you wished.

Permaculture, a combination of the words permanent and agriculture, offers a unique approach to the practice of sustainable farming, ranching, gardening and living. Permaculture shows how to observe the dynamics of natural ecosystems. We can apply this knowledge in designing constructed ecosystems that serve the needs of human populations without degrading our natural environment (water, land, forests) etc. In Nature, Nature is always caring for the earth, caring for people, and reinvesting in the future. These basic ethics form a solid foundation on which humans can build a stable and sustainable future.

I tried to complete the class but it was deactivated in the morning of 5/31 rather than at the end of the day. I had only a couple of activities to complete. Would be happy to change my review if you reactivate and allow me the day to finish the work. I invested alot of time in this and am disappointed I can not complete it. The online help files are not helpful at all.

Or at least I'm attempting to take it right now. I don't know whether the problem is with the Hosting Site or OSU's people, but I registered several hours ago and still have yet to receive my login information, whereas others I've been speaking to registered LATER and received theirs instantly.

Customer service won't even talk to me, redirecting me to some line where 'all agents are busy, please leave a message' [rather than putting me on hold so I can eventually get a chance to speak my case] and it even sends my email a notification they got my message... and as of the writing of this 'review' it's been two hours and I STILL don't have my login information.

I'd sure love to actually take this course, but thus far the technology and customer service are shutting me out.

This is an excellent intro/crash cours of the concept and principles of Permaculture, it helped me great time to put hand on all elements I need to be aware of, for better designing and planning of my life, and the teaching team are really helpful and responsive. I highly recommend it to anyone and everyone.
