Schools are still behind in adopting computers to prepare our kids for their futures. But it’s not just about putting computers in the classroom, a lot more needs to happen to build a digital learning environment. That is the topic of the Digital Learning Transition MOOC, which starts on Jan. 20 and lasts 8 weeks. It is for educators and other others involved in helping schools make the transition towards digital learning. Dr. Gary Kleiman, one of the MOOC instructors, and the Executive Director of the Friday Institute for Educational Innovation describes the challenge:

“It is not just about handing computers to teachers and students. It is about reforming curriculum and instruction, changing the culture of the classroom, setting the expectations of teachers and students, moving to a more personalized learning structure, and using more real-time formative assessment data. We know from experience that lots of places have bought a bunch of computers and then felt that it did not do them any good–because all they did was buy computers without an overall school reform plan.”
