Georgia Tech Launches Another MOOC-based Master’s Degree in Cybersecurity

The OMS Cybersecurity will follow the footsteps of OMS Analytics, and costs $10,000

Georgia Tech announced its third MOOC-based Master’s degree (and second with edX), this time in Cybersecurity. The Online Masters of Science in Cybersecurity or OMS Cybersecurity is fully online and costs around $10,000 ($310/credit hour).

The OMS Cybersecurity will follow the footsteps of OMS Analytics, which was announced early last year. Part of the OMS Analytics degree is available free in the form of a MicroMasters credential. It is not clear if OMS Cybersecurity will also launch a MicroMasters.

The OMS Analytics degree also costs around $10,000 and currently has 706 students enrolled. The first cohort of OMS Cybersecurity will start in January 2019 and will be limited to 250 students. The application deadline is October 1st, 2018.  More details about the degree can be found here: http://omscybersecurity.gatech.edu/

Georgia Tech was the first school to announce a MOOC-based Master’s degree back in 2013. The Online Masters of Science in Computer Science dubbed OMS CS, was announced in partnership with Udacity at a low cost of around $7000. To date, it has enrolled around 10,000 students worldwide.

Online Degrees are the new hot thing in MOOCs and a number of recent announcements have been made in that regard. I called this phenomenon, The Second Wave of MOOC Hype. EdX recently listed 13 upcoming online Masters degree on their website.

Last month, the University of Pennsylvania became the first Ivy League school to announce a MOOC-based online degree. They, along with Coursera announced a CS Masters degree targeted towards students from non-CS majors.

GeorgiaTech continues to promote accessible top-tier education! Well done to them! The world needs top quality education available to those that can’t afford much!

Coventry and Deekin, which also offer Cybersecurity through MOOC platforms, will be hard pressed to justify their price (which is more than double), while offering a lower ranked degree!
