Responsive Web Design

Written a year ago
This was an exceptionally good course, and served as a good overview of designing websites to be responsive to different devices. The lectures are detailed in the how and why of the code used, and gives a good starting point to build your own websites from.
My rating
Jason Michael Cherry completed this course, spending 3 hours a week on it and found the course difficulty to be medium.

Foundations of marketing analytics

Written a year ago
An exceptionally good course, giving a good business relevance for analytical techniques, and providing just enough technical details to do said analyses. This is a great course for analysts with technical expertise who want to expand the business relevance of their work for marketing uses.
My rating
Jason Michael Cherry completed this course, spending 3 hours a week on it and found the course difficulty to be medium.

Foundations of strategic business analytics

Written a year ago
A very solid overview of business analytic techniques, with an emphasis on the business relevance of analytics. There's just enough technical information provided to do the analyses, so you should come in with at least some background in R, but what you get is a very nice conceptual and practical understanding of business analytics.
My rating
Jason Michael Cherry completed this course, spending 3 hours a week on it and found the course difficulty to be medium.

Database Management Essentials

Written a year ago
A solid course that serves as a good introduction to relational database management systems. There's some basics here, especially about ERD's, that a person who's self-taught in this stuff may be unfamiliar with. This course serves as a good stepping stone to more applied relational database work.
My rating
Jason Michael Cherry completed this course, spending 4 hours a week on it and found the course difficulty to be hard.

Machine Learning Foundations: A Case Study Approach

Written a year ago
For what it is, this class does a good job overviewing different analytical techniques in machine learning. It's light on the details (that's what the follow-up courses are for), but gives you a flavor on how this stuff works.
My rating
Jason Michael Cherry completed this course, spending 3 hours a week on it and found the course difficulty to be medium.

Customer Analytics

Written a year ago
This course is specifically dedicated to conceptual and theoretical understanding of customer analytics. Though there's enough here that you could find application of the theory on your own, no practical analytical examples are given, nor any technical understanding of analysis given. This would be a useful course for an individual on a pure management track, in understanding the results of an analyst, but not for technical analysts.
My rating
Jason Michael Cherry completed this course, spending 2 hours a week on it and found the course difficulty to be easy.

Responsive Website Basics: Code with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript

Written a year ago
Outstanding class, and a perfect introduction to HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. The examples given are detailed, and explained well. Though there's a lot more this course could cover, for the 4 weeks it's a good deal, and gives you a good starting point to learn more on your own.
My rating
Jason Michael Cherry completed this course, spending 3 hours a week on it and found the course difficulty to be medium.

Project Management: The Basics for Success

Written a year ago
It's a good, solid course. The material is presented well, and is relevant to how to organize projects. I would have liked to have seen a bit more substance in the assignments (only quizzes), but good information is presented nonetheless.
My rating
Jason Michael Cherry completed this course, spending 2 hours a week on it and found the course difficulty to be easy.

Human-Centered Design: an Introduction

Written a year ago
This was an extremely challenging, but exceptionally rewarding, class. Dedicate a lot of time for this class, and you will learn a lot from it!
My rating
Jason Michael Cherry completed this course, spending 5 hours a week on it and found the course difficulty to be very hard.

The Data Scientist’s Toolbox

Written a year ago
This is really just a primer course for the following courses in the specialization. If you're familiar with R and Git/Github already, you can skip it easy.
My rating
Jason Michael Cherry completed this course, spending 2 hours a week on it and found the course difficulty to be very easy.

R Programming

Written a year ago
The learning curve for any programming language is pretty steep, though I will say that this class makes it seem harder than it really is. The examples given are good, and the exercises are useful, but the conceptual explanation is weak. I recommend supplementing this course with other 'learn R' resources on the web.
My rating
Jason Michael Cherry completed this course, spending 4 hours a week on it and found the course difficulty to be very hard.

Getting and Cleaning Data

Written a year ago
This course teaches a lot of extremely important skills in data science. No matter what you end up doing, dealing with data quality is going to be a part of it. This is a challenging class, and rightly so, as the work is tedious, but oh-so-important! The lectures do get a bit bland, but are informative.
My rating
Jason Michael Cherry completed this course, spending 4 hours a week on it and found the course difficulty to be hard.

Exploratory Data Analysis

Written a year ago
This is a good starting point for any data analysis work, and the course covers the basics, and a bit more, rather well. It's a bit light on what you should do with the information you gather from your data exploration though.
My rating
Jason Michael Cherry completed this course, spending 4 hours a week on it and found the course difficulty to be hard.

Case studies in business analytics with ACCENTURE

Written a year ago
Very disappointing, the case studies are very surface-level, and no actual analytics is more than just mentioned. The quizzes also don't connect to the material very well in most cases. It's not that there's nothing to be gotten from it, but this really isn't designed for analysts.
My rating
Jason Michael Cherry completed this course, spending 2 hours a week on it and found the course difficulty to be hard.

Introduction to Meteor.js Development

Written a year ago
Outstanding class, and a very good introduction to using Meteor.js. Examples are through and help to teach how to use Meteor.js. Final project is a bit challenging, but there's enough provided up to that point that a little creative thinking can get it done.
My rating
Jason Michael Cherry completed this course, spending 4 hours a week on it and found the course difficulty to be medium.

Diagnosing the Financial Health of a Business

Written a year ago
Very solid course, I found the lectures to be informative and clear, and the quizzes were perfectly tuned to the material. I do wish there was more than just quizzes though.
My rating
Jason Michael Cherry completed this course, spending 3 hours a week on it and found the course difficulty to be medium.

The Language and Tools of Financial Analysis

Written a year ago
Solid class, with a very strong overview on the elements of financial analysis. The end of class project was also very helpful. Would have liked to have a more in-depth understanding of what the financials mean on the ground for the business, but I'm expecting that later in the specalization.
My rating
Jason Michael Cherry completed this course, spending 3 hours a week on it and found the course difficulty to be medium.

Programming for Everybody (Getting Started with Python)

Written a year ago
A very solid introduction to Python, the instructor takes it slow and explains basic concepts. Very helpful for learning python, especially if you're new to programming.
My rating
Jason Michael Cherry completed this course, spending 2 hours a week on it and found the course difficulty to be medium.

Reproducible Research

Written a year ago
The course was solid, and gave a good overview on the why and how of making research reproducible. There's an overemphasis on doing work in R Markdown, but the concepts are generally applicable. Background knowledge in using R and running basic stats is necessary, as the course assumes you already have that going in.
My rating
Jason Michael Cherry completed this course, spending 2 hours a week on it and found the course difficulty to be medium.

Machine Learning: Regression

Written a year ago
This is one of the most informative and useful online classes I've taken to date. The material covered is detailed and applicable broadly. It is also exceptionally hard! The assignments are very challenging and extremely precise.

I struggled frequently and it ended up taking a significant amount of time, but it was extremely well worth it in the end. I'm very excited for the next class in the specialization!
My rating
Jason Michael Cherry completed this course, spending 8 hours a week on it and found the course difficulty to be very hard.

Python Data Structures

Written a year ago
An outstanding conclusion to the fundamentals of Python. This class, combined with the first in the specialization, are a great start to programming w/ Python, and I strongly recommend it for anyone who is interested in learning how to program. I've been doing Python for a few months in advance of this class, but the fundamentals covered here were exceptionally useful for me.

Jason Michael Cherry completed this course, spending 2 hours a week on it and found the course difficulty to be easy.

Web Application Development with JavaScript and MongoDB

Written a year ago
Outstanding class, like all of the classes in this specialization. The examples are detailed and explained well, the projects are challenging and help push me to really understand what I've learned, and the content is enjoyable to boot!
My rating
Jason Michael Cherry completed this course, spending 3 hours a week on it and found the course difficulty to be medium.

Using Python to Access Web Data

Written a year ago
Absolutely outstanding class, like all its predecessors. I'm extremely pleased with what I learned, and this helped give me the tools to make some progress on a side project I've been working on for several years.
My rating
Jason Michael Cherry completed this course, spending 3 hours a week on it and found the course difficulty to be medium.

Statistical Inference

Written a year ago
The material in the class is solid, but is poorly described. These are the foundations of statistical analysis, and unfortunately there's a lot of statistics jargon that students aren't going to be familiar with in here.
My rating
Jason Michael Cherry completed this course, spending 3 hours a week on it and found the course difficulty to be medium.

Using Databases with Python

Written a year ago
Outstanding class, like all its predecessors in the specialization! At the end the assignments do get a little more along the line of 'adjust my code' rather than 'write your own code', but the programs are very complex at this point, and the instructor does an excellent job of explaining what to do and how to do it.
My rating
Jason Michael Cherry completed this course, spending 3 hours a week on it and found the course difficulty to be medium.

The Role of Global Capital Markets

Written a year ago
Very solid course, with a good overview on global market complexity. The final project seems a bit detached from the material, however.
My rating
Jason Michael Cherry completed this course, spending 3 hours a week on it and found the course difficulty to be medium.

Responsive Website Tutorial and Examples

Written a year ago
Outstanding class! This one is different from the other classes, as breath of material is larger, but depth is less. A perfect follow-up to the very depthful classes that precede it in the specialization.
My rating
Jason Michael Cherry completed this course, spending 4 hours a week on it and found the course difficulty to be medium.

M101P: MongoDB for Developers

Written a year ago
A solid introduction to MongoDB. The class covers a fair amount of depth in how to work with the database, and how to use Python to access it (via PyMongo).
My rating
Jason Michael Cherry completed this course, spending 4 hours a week on it and found the course difficulty to be medium.

Regression Models

Written a year ago
This is a decent class, covering linear regression and a few of its variants in good detail. It's a challenging subject, but presented acceptably here.
My rating
Jason Michael Cherry completed this course, spending 3 hours a week on it and found the course difficulty to be medium.

Practical Machine Learning

Written 11 months ago
Of all the JHU Data Science specialization courses I've had, this was by far the most enjoyable. I really liked how the class was more in the style of 'here's some techniques, now do whatever you want on the project.' Prior courses are, and understandably so, more constrained in the assignments. It's not until here that the student really has the tools to be able to flex their analytical muscles, and it pays off.

Also, of the three instructors, I am most favorable to Jeff Leek, who teaches this class. He communicates much clearer than Roger Peng or Brian Caffo. I find I learn more from his content than the others.

Lastly, I will say that this class doesn't hold a torch to University of Washington's Machine Learning specialization. That's expected since this is one class and that's a whole series of classes. If you're hungry for more after this one, I highly recommend UWash's Machine Learning specialization.
My rating
Jason Michael Cherry completed this course, spending 2 hours a week on it and found the course difficulty to be medium.

Machine Learning: Classification

Written 11 months ago
This continues UWash's outstanding Machine Learning series of classes, and is equally as impressive, if not moreso, then the Regression class it follows. I'm super-excited for the next class!
My rating
Jason Michael Cherry completed this course, spending 5 hours a week on it and found the course difficulty to be hard.

Developing Data Products

Written 10 months ago
Compared to the other classes in the JHU Data Science specialization, this one is pretty laid back. It's useful information, and teaches a few nice tricks on how to present data analysis results.
My rating
Jason Michael Cherry completed this course, spending 2 hours a week on it and found the course difficulty to be easy.

Framework for Data Collection and Analysis

Written 10 months ago
A good overview of surveys and data collection methods. The Total Survey Error framework is good, but its application isn't shown as strongly as it should be. Regardless this is a good primer for future material.

Becoming a Confident Trainer

Written 8 months ago
This course covers exactly what it says it does, and provides some solid beginner tips on how to train people. I was very pleased that assessment was also covered.

Machine Learning: Clustering & Retrieval

Written 4 months ago
Another phenomenal machine learning class by University of Washington! This one is a little lighter on the math and programming, mostly because the concepts (especially in the last two modules) get extremely abstract! However the concept is explained well enough to recreate the functions as custom programs, which is what I love about these classes.
My rating
Jason Michael Cherry completed this course, spending 3 hours a week on it and found the course difficulty to be medium.

Technical Interview

Written 4 months ago
An outstanding class! This is an absolute must for those of us who didn't take a traditional Computer Science program (like myself) but want to do Computer Science work!

Intro to Hadoop and MapReduce

Written 3 months ago
This is a solid introduction to Hadoop and MapReduce concepts. The assignments are a good exercise in getting familiar with the basics. There's a lot that this course doesn't cover, but it's enough to get your feet wet with Hadoop and MapReduce concepts.
