Supply Chain Management: A Learning Perspective

Written 3 years ago
Hi. Supply Chain Management - A learning perspective is an excellent course taught by Prof Dr Bowon Kim of KAIST on COURSERA. The Professor has been highly successful in designing the course syllabus and adopting a teaching style that gives the students a very good understanding of SCM in a short span of time. The students who complete the course will naturally generate in their minds, a clear framework that helps them to memorize the important SCM concepts in a logical order. This will help them in their further studies and application of the concepts. I would highly recommend the course to all business students / professionals who want to quickly cover the key concepts and expand their knowledge in the SCM discipline. Thanks to Prof Kim, KAIST and Coursera for the excellent course.

Foundations of Business Strategy

Written 3 years ago
Hi. FOBS is one of the courses I have enjoyed learning most. Globalization and liberalization has increased the uncertainty in the business environment. Any organization that wants to survive and grow on a continuous basis needs strategic management. The course introduces students to the various tools that can be used by a strategist to analyse the industry structure, firm structure and competitive dynamics to evaluate the current position of a firm and to develop a better competitive position for the future. It covers the various ways an organization can position itself viz a viz its competitors . It also covers the kinds of diversification and the rationale for a firm to diversify. The risks of diversifying are also covered. Overall the course is an excellent one that gives you a birds eye view of the subject. The course is in great demand with more than a lakh students registering each time the course is run. The superior teaching skills of Professor Michael Lenox has made the course even more attractive to the students. The quizzes really help students to apply their mind on what has been learnt and master the concepts well. There is a final project that gives the student an opportunity to apply the tools learned to a real business case. I participated in the next three sessions of this course as Community TA with great satisfaction.

Learning How to Learn: Powerful mental tools to help you master tough subjects

Written 3 years ago
Hi. This course clearly describes the complex process of how the human brain works while learning. Students get exposed to many new concepts : focused and diffused modes of brain functioning, working memory , short term memory and long term memory, learning techniques like chunking, spaced repetition, recalling in different environments, avoiding tendencies to procrastinate and so on. How the neuromodulators get released in the brain when you learn with motivation and how you can benefit out of that. Anyone can improve his or her learning habits by doing this interesting course. Dr Terrence Sejnowski and Dr Barbara Oakley are both excellent teachers. It is a highly recommended MOOC course.

Computer Networks

Written 3 years ago
Hi. Computer Networks is an excellent course that helps anyone, even without any prior exposure to Computer science, gain knowledge on how messages are transmitted along links, what are the diverse problems encountered in the process and what are the mechanisms in place to address these issues and keep up the network performance. Dr David Wetherall, with his great teaching skill, presents complex concepts in a very lucid style. I have repeated this course another two times after completing it, in the role of a Community TA. Since the course is rich in content, you gain a lot out of repeating it. Each time the course was repeated, the quizzes and exams have been improved and made challenging. The course demands serious involvement.

Introduction to Financial Accounting

Written 3 years ago
Introduction to Financial Accounting is an excellent course that teaches accounting to any one who is totally new to the subject. Prof Brian Bushee has no doubt taken a lot of pains in preparing the high quality study materials. His teaching style is excellent and one needs to do this course to learn how good an online course can be. The course has a lot of peculiarities as compared to most other MOOCs. Tests and home works are of a very high standard that checks your conceptual knowledge. There is activeparticipation in the forums and Prof Bushee interacts a lot with the students in the forums. I would recommend this course to anyone who wants to learn financial accounting, even if he knows nothing about the subject.

Introduction to Operations Management

Written 3 years ago
Introduction to Operations Management is a great course that gives you a lot of knowledge on how to improve operations in an organization. It introduces the learners to the 4 dimensions of operations performance - Efficiency, Quality, Responsiveness and Variety. Prof Christian Terwiesch is a good teacher. The quizzes and tests help you to learn the concepts well. When I did this course, there were three ways one could do the course - academic track, practitioners track and both tracks together. You had to do both tracks for getting a distinction. For the practitioner track, you had to select a real operations case and apply the concepts learned in the course to improve it. I really enjoyed the course.

Now, after this course became part of the Business Foundations specialization course, the 6 weeks course has been shortened to a 4 weeks course. The first two weeks covers Process analysis. The second week covers Productivity and tools for improving it. The third week covers Quality management. The two modules on Responsiveness and Variety have been dropped from the syllabus after the course was shortened. But the materials for the dropped topics, however, are being made available for the benefit of students. I would highly recommend this course to anyone interested in operations improvement. I really enjoyed this course and never feel like leaving this class. I have been CTA to this course in the last two iterations.

Fundamentals of Project Planning and Management

Written 2 years ago
Fundamentals of Project Planning and Management is a good course of 4 weeks duration for the beginners. Most of us will have to manage projects in our career knowingly or unknowingly. Most of us become project managers by accident without any formal training. This course helps you gain a good grasp of the basic concepts so that you can successfully manage projects. it is important to know the big mistakes project managers can commit and the course exposes you to these. The quizzes are good and help you learn concepts. Prof Yale and the TA were active at the discussion forums. There were two google hangout sessions organized for clearing doubts of students. The google hangout session recordings were made available in the lecture section for the benefit of learners who could not participate. I would consider this course as the stepping stone towards a career in project management or PM certification.

Introduction to Marketing

Written 2 years ago
Introduction to Marketing is a course that covers a lot of ground on Marketing management including branding, customer centricity and strategies for entering into the market. It is difficult to believe that you can learn such a lot of concepts in a MOOC course. The three professors Barbara Kahn, David Bell and Peter Fader have done their best to make the course a great learning experience. It is the first course you must do to get a fundamental knowledge of all areas of the marketing management discipline.

The course has recently been shortened into a 4 weeks course. It is now a part of Whartons Business Foundations Specialization with 3 other courses.

Any young executive working for a firm knowingly or unknowingly becomes part of project teams at the most unexpected moments. Many even become project managers by accident without any formal training in the discipline. Managing projects is one of the most challenging activities with risks involved. The probability of failing in project management is high without formal training. 'Project management: The basics for success' I should say, is the stepping stone that helps you get a quick grasp of the discipline. Prof Rob Stone is a great teacher and I really enjoyed his class. Chemistry

Chemistry course helped me to refresh my knowledge in basic chemistry after years of my education. The teachers are great - Dr Allison Soult and Dr Kim Woodrum. The course takes you through the concepts of atomic structure, periodic table and trends, bonding, stoichiometry and thermochemistry. The teachers have been able to present the topics in a very interesting way. This 10 weeks course will be a great help to students, particularly those who are weak in the subject, to develop an interest and refresh their knowledge before joining a serious course of study in Chemistry. Practice problems help learners to test the understanding at each stage of learning.

The course 'Innovation and IT Management' is highly recommended for IT managers, people who wish to become IT managers in the future and top level executives in organizations who have a role to play in IT related decision making. Project Management for Business Professionals

Project management for Business professionals is a course that introduces you to practical concepts in the management of projects including various methodologies. The instructor, Peter Von Stackelberg uses a small number of videos, and plenty of reading materials from other websites to introduce you to the subject. The instructor has a lot of practical experience on Project management and participants get a good idea on the factors critical to managing different types of projects and the various common mistakes committed by project managers. Overall a great course for practicing project managers as well as business students who will have to manage projects of varying sizes during their career. The course materials focus more on the concepts of PMBOK methodology of the PMI (Project Management Institute) even though other methodologies like agile are covered in lesser detail.

Statistics for Business - II

Written 2 years ago
QM101.2x is the second course on statistics in the series of 4 courses offered by IIMBx. If you have a fairly good understanding about descriptive statistics and on using excel sheets for processing data sets (eg: functions like vlookup, pivot tables etc) and computing measures of central tendencies, dispersion etc, then you can directly start learning this course. Otherwise, it is better to first complete or at least audit QM101.1x before enrolling for this course to fully realize the benefits. QM101.2x covers more ground on descriptive statistics and statistical distributions like Normal, Poisson and how these can be used to process huge data sets using R in the business context. The exercises and case-lets will help you to get a fairly good grasp of the basics of R programming, make you aware of the power of the R platform in processing huge data-sets viz-a-viz excel and create in you, a desire to learn R in greater depth. The videos are of high quality. No doubt, Prof Shankar Venkatagiri and team have put in a lot of efforts to create this wonderful course. It is a pleasure to learn. Anyone who wants to acquire data analysis skills will find it very useful. I would highly recommend this course to students and practicing executives.
