Statistics: The Science of Decisions

Written 3 years ago
This class is perfect for the Statics beginner. It gives a thorough and easy to understand explanation about the key concepts in Statistics with examples and reinforcing exercises.

I was struggling at separating the mean (μ) for the sample mean (x-bar) and didn't have the slightest idea of what "standard deviation" was until I took this class. I'm very grateful for it and although it doesn't cover fully the topics of an intro to Stats class, it explains core concepts perfectly!

Intro to Java Programming

Written 3 years ago
This class really helps you understand basic OOP concepts through Java, although most likely you will need to accompany it by a book of your own. I had to struggle through some of the classes and take a look at some stuff on my own in order to achieve the level they ask for. However, it is definitely NOT an advanced class in Java. If you do end up taking this class know 2 things:

1) You might need to put in a little extra effort at some points

2) Once you're done you will definitely feel like you know Java, or at least have a good feel for OOP concepts.

Learning How to Learn: Powerful mental tools to help you master tough subjects

Written 3 years ago
This was one of the most rewarding courses I have taken. It's also very conveniently the most time-effective one because it teaches you a broad variety of tips and "cheats" for hacking into your own mind and making yourself feel and BE more productive.

In barely 4 weeks, and without any technical language (even the optional course book is written as if it were a friend talking to you!!) I've learned how to beat one of my biggest problems -procrastination , how to become more productive in the way I study (learn more in less time) , how to memorize things strongly and when to use long/short term memory and how to improve them, how we sometimes unconsciously block out correct answers while taking tests, in which order it is best to answer questions on tests and why focus on things in a broader context rather than seeing only the small picture (forest vs tree analogy) amongst many, many other things.

My advice on this course is to take it without thinking about it twice. It will leave you in a very short time (for a mooc) with a lot of knowledge and gained wisdom on many aspects of your life. Truly a life-enhancing experience that is free(!!) and nobody should miss out on. Are you still reading this review??What are you waiting for!Look for the next starting session!!

Programming Mobile Applications for Android Handheld Systems: Part 1

Written 3 years ago
The course is quite challenging for a beginner but will leave you with a taste of the immense world of Android Programming. I really liked how the structure of this class is provided. Everything is well organized and well explained. The weekly projects (for which you have two weeks btw) are not very hard to accomplish but you will need some research on some subjects if you are not familiar with Android concepts.

Creative, Serious and Playful Science of Android Apps

Written 3 years ago
Although I haven't finished the course each week is easy going & introductory to Android concepts that are otherwise very confusing to find out on your own. Definitely recommend this as a starter point for anyone that seeks to start programming Android apps

Begin Programming: Build Your First Mobile Game

Written 3 years ago
VERY EASY course. It is mostly to learn Java NOT to learn Android as the title boasts.

I was also disappointed at the fact that they do not help you create an Android game from scratch but give you 90 % of the code all ready to go and all you do is practice some if's , loops and arrays. I repeat, this is a JAVA class working on an android environment.

Web Technologies

Written 2 years ago
The content was very engaging and interesting throughout the course, especially for a newbee to web development like me.

Only thing I didn't quite enjoy was the instructors way of teaching. His english was a bit rough (his native language is German) so some things didn't quite make sense or I couldn't hear what he was saying.

Another thing is that he mostly read out some notes that were already offered on the course which means that he didn't explain the concept in more detail than that which the course already provided (for the majority of lessons).

The platform is also going through some improvements, so the provider wasn't perfectly responsive throughout, though that's understandable.

Overall, the knowledge one gets from this class and the certificate of completion for free are definitely two things that boost the class to a 5-star experience

Work Smarter, Not Harder: Time Management for Personal & Professional Productivity

Written 2 years ago
This "class" is more like an hour long presentation split up into modules. And it's being charged $32 in the specification...really!?

The content was ok. It really isn't challenging in the least bit. It offers some interesting advice on how to improve your time management and avoid "useless" actions.

The instructor was hardly engaging. I found myself doing things on other tabs on the last two weeks because she couldn't keep my attention. I do know that these are videos and not actual interactions but she was repetitive, dull and the productions generally needs work to keep attention since the object being taught is really self explanatory.

Which brings me to my next point. The class in itself offers some good advice but it's not something you will miss out on. In my opinion, give it a go. Spend a couple of hours total time to finish the class get some good tips and move on.

How to Use Git and GitHub

Written 11 months ago
The course is a great introduction to these very interesting technologies. The teachers are very thorough on the basic commands and usage of Git and set plenty of examples of real life dimension with which the student is able to understand and get used to the system of Git.

The class is well organized and spread out into 3 sections of increasing importance and difficulty as one continues on the progress you have done in previous ones.

Overall, after finishing this course you will have a full understanding of what a Version Control System (VCS) like Git is and how Github comes to complement and add features to it. It is a MUST if you are in IT or computer-related sciences, in my opinion!

Responsive Website Basics: Code with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript

Written 4 months ago
It is a very good introductory course to HTML, CSS and JavaScript as well as libraries Bootstrap and jQuery.

However, it does not leave you with a feeling of mastery in any of these technologies. That's to be expected, of course, in the amount of time the course gives you the practice you will have done will not be much. It still must be pointed out that there is not much detailed explanation to the things going on, especially in the JS side of things as a lot of JS elements like arrays and DOM manipulation are completely left out. Hints have been left about these crucial subjects being taught in later courses of the specification but if you are looking to learn in depth/ advanced JS you're better off skipping this course.

The assignments are easy to complete and quite thoroughly explained and give you a good place to start off in order to understand web technologies and responsive design. Overall it gives what it promises and is delightful in its implementation.

Responsive Web Design Fundamentals

Written 2 months ago
It is a GREAT course to help you dip your toes into the ocean that is Responsive Web Design. It does not go into great depths in the things it mentions but rather eases you into the material and the ideology of RWD showing you at the same time the implementation.

Some knowledge of HTML and CSS is required to breeze through the class, however this is , in a way , the successor to the HTML & CSS class taught in the same program so nothing less should be expected.

For me it was an enlightening experience and I recommend it to anyone who wishes to dwelve deeper into the mysteries of Web Development!!

Intro to HTML and CSS

Written 2 months ago
This course is definitely NOT FOR BEGINNERS.

That being said it was a delight for me. Learn some html and css from more basic walk-through style classes like the ones offered at Coursera, Code Academy , even W3Schools and come back to this. Having some knowledge on these subjects will help tremendously out and instead of giving you frustration it will teach and offer clarity for many concepts that seem a bit difficult to grasp at first.

It is , as mentioned by many others, a little more advanced course but it is very rewarding as you will learn a lot of industry approven techniques for coding up a website. There is even a 20 minute walkthrough of turning a mock-up design into a website towards the end, using Bootstrap and custom classes that really offers some insight to all the blurriness of the subject being taught.

The class is somewhat rushed, but again, it is not meant to teach HTML and CSS in depth but rather to give you an overview of what you can do with the languages so I recommend it , sure, as long as you're in it for higher-level concepts than coding.
