Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on Marine Litter

Written 2 years ago
This in-depth course provides the latest approaches to understanding and reducing the massive problem of global marine pollution. Perhaps 90% of oceanic pollution has come from land-based sources. Consumerism is now the driving force on our planet: sooner or later most of this stuff ends up in the ocean ~ everybody contributes in some way. Plastics are now in the global food-web!

This MOOC features an expert track, which I would recommend. A particular feature is the ability to form working groups: in my case we established a group for Oceania that had people from mainland New Zealand and Australia, as well as Pacific Island nations where much of the consumer world rubbish strands ashore. You will have to work hard, but the lectures and tests are excellent. Bravo to Netherlands Open University.

Making Sense of Climate Science Denial

Written 2 years ago
A very interesting course with application far beyond the subject matter. It would be very helpful for most people to understand media and public pronouncements. Some real treasures are included, such as: 'Logical fallacies; and the Dragons'. Excellent course!

Essential Tools For The Low Carbon Economy

Written 2 years ago
This course was really designed for business people rather than scientists. It does provide very useful tools for deciding which options one might utilise to produce a meaningful and achievable low carbon organisation or government department. Unfortunately politics will likely get in the way of a carbon-neutral global economy. The exercises are interesting and helpful. Worth doing!

Climate Change Science and Negotiations

Written 2 years ago
This course was complicated but interesting. Professor Jeffrey Sachs discussed topics in depth, but the format was always as a lecture, and could be lengthy at times. The approach is academic. It brought us up to date on climate negotiations and the burning issue remains just how hard it is to get unaccountable states to agree to meaningful measures. States play too many games and cover this with international law: words may have particular meanings that are at variance with common usage. Aimed mostly at people who are left-brained, but the material is very relevant to our modern world.

International Law

Written 2 years ago
An extremely interesting course. The layout was excellent and the downloadable resources first-rate. The case studies were hard, but over time the most important legal terms became clear. The greatest value was how international law has improved over time. The slow, steady and inexorable progress being made in relationships between States. Excellent insights into how the UN Security Council; the International Court of Justice; and the International Criminal Court function. It forms part of a micro-Masters course from Louvain, and Professor Pierre d'Argent is excellent. Difficult, but I recommend it to serious students. The hardest part for me was the timed tests: having a poor internet connection could be a problem.
