Social Network Analysis

Written 6 months ago
This was an absolutely brilliant course for me.

In some parts challenging (many of the people on the course were really clever) - but it opened my eyes up to a whole new dimension of connectedness, methods, thinking and technology.

The presenter was knowledgeable, but more importantly knew how to transfer that knowledge to a students - including those with a huge level of knowledge (some people on it were from LinkedIn and FB) and those like me that were completely new to the domain.

So sorry to see that it is no longer available. If it becomes available again, take it - and persevere!

Mindshift: Break Through Obstacles to Learning and Discover Your Hidden Potential

Written 6 months ago
The graphics were irritating (although in the last week, this was, to some extent explained) and the content doesn't fit easily into any bucket - but I would still recommend this for anyone interested in either learning, or working.

Design Thinking for Innovation

Written 6 months ago
A good introduction to Design Thinking - a technique that is very much in demand in the Product Management or IT industries at the moment.

New Models of Business in Society

Written 6 months ago
A strange course, with an interesting lecturer - but great material around new approaches to dealing with stakeholders.

I probably won't ever do any follow up learning, but pleased I had this exposure.

Foundations of Business Strategy

Written 6 months ago
It's hard to find good intro courses on business strategy...but this was typical high University of Virginia / Coursera standard

Programming for Everybody (Getting Started with Python)

Written 6 months ago
My mistake was in taking a beginner course in Python - I probably shouldn't have enrolled. On the other hand, the lecturer was Charles Severance!

If you want to learn python, this would probably be the starting point. Basic material, explained well in multiple ways, supplemented with some exercises.

Nutrition, Health, and Lifestyle: Issues and Insights

Written 6 months ago
More people should do this course. It's basic, science driven principles applied to everyday nutrition.

Nutrition isn't really an interest of mine, but it is basic knowledge, and this well presented course gave the information in an easily understandable way. I think it is an investment of time that was well worth the knowledge (and has, for me at least, resulted in direct improvement in my own health).

Learning How to Learn: Powerful mental tools to help you master tough subjects

Written 6 months ago
I have recommended this course to so many people. And it is one of the top 10 MOOCs of all time because obviously so many others have done the same.

Great tips for learning, presented in a quirky and educational way.

It's a must do course.

Surviving Disruptive Technologies (On Demand)

Written 6 months ago
This course was worth it for the lecturer's Case Studies alone. I have recommended a lot of people take this as a great way of getting a broader perspective of business and change.

And it was all well presented - to the point where this is one of the few lecturers I actively look for with the intention of enrolling in his courses.

It looks like the material has got a little corrupt since I did the course - which is a real shame Hopefully Coursera will fix that and restore the old stuff to it's rightful state :-)

Economics of Crime

Written 6 months ago
Pretty basic course, but it has made me much think much more critical about how our politicians approach law and order.

This was an absolutely great course. Recommended.

Identifying Food Fraud

Written 6 months ago
It's not an area that many people think about - but if you are interested in food, it's probably a good investment of a few hours of your time as a good introduction.

Using Open Data for Digital Business

Written 5 months ago
This is a very basic introduction to the management considerations of using Open Data. It's ok for people who haven't had any exposure - but then it is unlikely that they will be taking the course anyway.

Certificate Program in Public Procurement

Written 5 months ago
Overall, I'm please I did this course.

But coming from the World Bank (an organisation that must be seen to remain free from corruption) and focused on countries where corruption is obviously a major challenge, it felt like a completely different perspective.

The material was relatively simple.

The biggest downside was the delivery method - much of it was based on animated characters talking - a method I find condescending, slow and ineffective, with very little in common with most modern online methods. (Seriously, I would suggest the folks who made material do another MOOC themselves, and see what has changed - this was the kind of poor quality delivery methodology businesses used for internal training 20 years ago).

But I commend the World Bank in putting some effort into improving the levels of training in this space with this rather unique offering. I'm not sure I would go into large scale RFPs based solely on this, but it is probably good backgrounder for anyone who is involved for the first time.

Antiquities Trafficking and Art Crime

Written 5 months ago
For me, this was a completely different subject area - and isn't this one of the great benefits of MOOCs - that we can taste the unknown, presented in structured ways by knowledgeable people?

It was engaging, with some remarkable images (one before and after looters image was particularly memorable). For me, it gave me some basic history, as well as an understanding of how business happens in the art and antiquities worlds, and just how crime happens.

It covered different categories, times, and geographical regions, which meant that the material was wide ranging, and at times felt a little light, but provided enough referenced material to be able to head off to read more when I wanted to.

If you are into geopolitics, anthropology, or just plan art, this is a great backgrounder course. If you are like me, inartistic and blind to that half of the world, this is an eye opener.

Introduction to Process Mining with ProM

Written 5 months ago
It really didn't grab my attention. ProM isn't that commonly used in my country, the presentation didn't engage me, and the exercises felt too irrelevant to what I was expecting.

But that is only my view. Maybe your experiences, needs, perspectives are different...

Systems Thinking and Complexity

Written 5 months ago
The presentation was quite ordinary - but the material was engrossing. This course has left me enthusiastic to follow up on the area, and thinking about how I could apply it during the day. And I guess that is a great outcome form any course.

Recommended, especially if you are interested in management or technology domains.

Social Media Analytics: Using Data to Understand Public Conversations

Written 2 months ago
A nice course interested in understanding basic social media analytics, covering both the approach, and some easily accessible tools (Tableau and Gephi in particular are a nice tool for people looking to grow their experience).

I found it a bit slow to start with, but that may be because it wasn't a new area, and I was looking forward to the practical exercises - which there were lots of.

A bonus for me - all the tools used run under Linux.
