Introduction to Computer Science

Written 3 years ago
They were not kidding when they said the course was "demanding". I spent at least 2 hours daily working on the course and each course week took me a month to complete. It was exhausting a lot of the time. The problem sets are designed in such a way that one is forced to read and do further research to accomplish them. The sense of satisfaction I gained from completing each problem set was tremendous and even though the learning curve is steep (to say the least), I am now comfortable in my understanding of the basics of computer science and in coding in C. The web design module was probably the most fun even though for me personally it was the most demanding.

I guarantee you will be pulling your hair out sometimes if you take this course, but you will have tremendous fun most of the time and the sense of accomplishment is exhilarating!

Leaders of Learning

Written 3 years ago
This course was an eye-opener to the way my brain thinks, learns and ultimately the way I express myself and why. It's liberating to finally understand how I personally absorb and retain information and that every person does it differently. Find out what your method is and you have a better chance of internalizing the information you want to learn. The course also introduces a philosophy of learning as seen through the experiences of various teachers who have revolutionized the ways they pass on knowledge to maximize student benefit.

For anyone not entirely satisfied with their learning technique, I recommend following through the entire course and completing all assignments to gain greater understanding of what learning method is most helpful to you. I also recommend this course for those interested in techniques of teaching from the point of view of those in the field. Even though the material is not heavy, the course providers offer suggestions on further reading for those interested.

Design Thinking

Written 2 years ago
This is a very good beginner's course in design. The material is appropriate for a first-timer. The main drawback arose from few of the lecturers not being comfortable with the English language. The first few lecturers were reading from a script making it a little impersonal. I realize MOOCs are quite impersonal by nature, but I still want to think the lecturer is talking directly to me.

In addition, I don't think the design of the background for lectures allowed concentration on what was being said. It consisted of layers of huge white cubes that would show different colors depending on the light sources around them. In a sense it was artistic and fitting for a course on design, but I found it distracting and slightly claustrophobic.

If you ask questions on their discussion board however, do not expect them to be answered. Questions never seem to be answered, at least as far as I could see on the most recent pages. As I hardly ever refer to discussion boards, this was not a drawback for me moving through the course.

On the other hand, the lecture content was very good and the extra-reading appropriate for anyone wishing to read further into the topic. Most of the lecturers are fluent English speakers later in the course making it easier to follow than the start. Each lecturer teaches an aspect in design they specialize in. I found this a good course as a beginner.

Big Data Analysis with Apache Spark

Written 2 years ago
This is an excellent course for beginners to the world of Spark but it would be a good idea to have some programming knowledge in Python as well as basic understanding of what big data means. The problem sets are organized methodically with much explanation so even if you don't know much statistics you can still follow with the programming. I'm no statistician but managed to go through all problem sets with few mistakes. It certainly was fun on top of being educational and informative.

Astronomy: Discovering the Universe

This is a beginner course in astronomy. It's probably too short for those in the field even as amateurs. But it certainly does whet the appetite to dig for more information. I would say enjoyable but wish there had been more detail on topics for each of the 4 week.
