The Analytics Edge

If you're like me prefer study by doing this course is for you. Endless problem sets - many of them based on real data - will definitely help you in this. You'll get understanding of some most famous problems in data science (IBM Watson etc.) - just watch the first lecture to get an overview of them.

Probably the best part of the course is Kaggle competition - you'll be able to understand the gap between guided problem sets and real-life situations. Don't be discouraged if you can' get in TOP from your first attempt. It's not that easy.

This course is not about math. If you're interested in some math background go to Stanford course on statistical learning.

Algorithms, Part I

Written 2 years ago
This is kind of specific course on algorithms - authors have their own Java library, specific interests in applications and even their own terminology sometimes. This is course about Java realization of algorithms, not about math.

The best part of the course is of course problem sets with rigorous tests. There are a lot of additional exercises in their book if you're interested in programming of algorithms - many of them are from job interviews.

Introduction to Computer Science and Programming Using Python

Written 2 years ago
This course is hard like other MIT courses. Be prepared to work a lot to perform well. A good news that it's not that hard like previous course in functional programming. The second part is about scientific applications of python that is not very common for such courses but natural for MIT. Personally I was highly interested in Monte-Carlo simulations.

Cryptography

Much more approachable course than those in Stanford (and even than Katz own book). Especially if you prefer top-to-bottom method. I've completed Stanford course 2 years before and it's great but now I'm really understand mechanics behind modern cryptography and all its proofs.
