Operations Analytics

Best course out of the specialization in terms of clear presentation, hands-on learning (in Excel), and exposure to some basic concepts. Very professional preparation and delivery of course content - I wish all MOOCs were done this well.

Learning How to Learn: Powerful mental tools to help you master tough subjects

Written 2 years ago
Great course, especially for high school students transitioning into college, students tackling subjects that are difficult for them, and life-long learners who care about really learning material instead of glossing over it with just enough work to pass a test. The best part for me has been the springboard provided by the class to further reading in learning, psychology, and education. Additionally, I receive a weekly email from Barbara telling me of related news, stories, and interesting articles, etc. The course is a bit corny but the material is sticking in my brain - the best test there is.

The Fiction of Relationship

Written 2 years ago
Very interesting and challenging, at least to me. I hadn't taken a literature course for many years, and found it difficult to shift my thinking and writing to understand and communicate about underlying meanings of 'fiction' and 'relationship'. I completed the entire course except for the last assignment, when other activities got in the way. The course gave me a shift of perspective and introduced or re-introduced me to some outstanding fiction.

Statistical Thinking for Data Science and Analytics

Written 2 years ago
This class is a mess - we're unable to download lecture videos and transcripts, the powerpoint slides are not available, the quiz policy has changed midstream (you can now retake once instead of zero retakes). The quizzes are confusing and no feedback is available giving reasons for right and wrong answers. Very little problem solving or real life examples - mostly just professors lecturing at a blackboard - albeit a fancy blackboard that is transparent. Waiting for a professor to write out formulas while they mutter them to themselves is a waste of video time. I can't read the 'blackboard' most of the time if I also want to read the subtitles, and the primary instructor has quite a heavy foreign accent. I'm now looking for a better MOOC on statistics.

Business Metrics for Data-Driven Companies

Written 2 years ago
This was a good course for starting to learn about business metrics - lots of real life stories, an engaging, knowledgeable professor, quizzes that helped to integrate learning each week.

Mastering Data Analysis in Excel

Written 2 years ago
This course is NOT the course to take if you want to learn Excel or to build analytical models in Excel. Instead it's a course that seems to be presenting fairly sophisticated analytical techniques using already-built Excel models. The lectures went from a somewhat promising start to a steady downhill progression of blackboard presentations that ultimately completely confused me. I'm stubborn, so I'm planning to retake the class. The second time around I'll know to start working on the final by week 2 so I can tackle it as we go through the material. Starting the final after listening to all of the lectures simply told me how little of the material I had actually understood and am now able to apply. I really enjoyed the professor in the first course of the specialization; on this course he seemed to be just going through the paces with little enthusiasm and no patience for those of us who haven't majored in Statistics.

Customer Analytics

I like to take the quizzes the first time before I go through the lectures and class materials to establish a benchmark for myself. On most of the quizzes for this course I passed them on that first try using common sense. The lectures reminded me of high-priced business consultants who have a slick style and good spiel but really not very much to say.

Gamification

Written 2 years ago
Professor Werbach presents a series of lectures that go into real depth about gamification, what it is, the psychology and research behind it, and implications for developers and people interested in the topic. I'm not an online gamer so am not very familiar with basics such as points, badges, leaderboards, and levelling up. Examples of games and gamification are plentiful in the course so it's easy to follow the material. (I became interested in gamification after reading 'Reality is Broken' by Jane McGonigal.)

Professor Werbach is enthusiastic, scholarly but engaging, and has put together a very professional MOOC. He could teach other professors a lot about online learning.

Accounting Analytics

Written 2 years ago
stay tuned . . . so far (one week in) it's been just OK. I don't yet have a clear understanding of what the topic really means and how it differs from traditional financial analysis. It's probably not a course to take if you don't have some familiarity with accounting. The lectures are pretty dry and run through concepts without much problem solving or practical application until the quiz.
