Image and Video Processing: From Mars to Hollywood with a Stop at the Hospital

The main issue of this course is its presentation. I would've been fine with it if it were classroom lectures, but unfortunately, it is not. Video lessons are very long, sometimes 30min+, which could mostly be condensed in 10min+ videos, if they were better planned and executed. I watched the videos almost exclusively at 2x speed to make it bearable.

There are also tons of equations, mostly with multiple integrals, all of them handwritten. This, of course, takes a lot of time in the videos, and also make it very hard to understand such expressions. I really cannot understand why they were not embedded in the slides.

The quizzes/exercises are also unsatisfying. To pass the course, it's only required to answer to weekly quizzes, which don't require any studying at all. On top of that, there are optional programming exercises, but they are not graded, so you don't have any feedback, unless you post your results in the forums.

TL;DR

Video lectures are frustrating and exercises are lacking. Udacity's Intro to Computer Vision covers the first half of this course in a much more friendly and structured way. OpenCV's tutorials for Python are also a good alternative for hands-on programming material.

Data Analysis and Statistical Inference

One of the best MOOCs out there, not really much to say besides that. Very time consuming if you choose to join the track with programming assignments. However, they are totally worth your time. The recommended exercises are also useful, and the final project was interesting as well. It's just the perfect MOOC (for me, at least).

Machine Learning for Data Analysis

Written 2 years ago
Very shallow course.

I had just finished Andrew Ng's Machine Learning class and was looking for something to continue to build my knowledge in ML when I bumped into this course. It looked very interesting, as it covered algorithms that were not explored in Ng's course, like decision tree and random forests.

However, I was very disappointed when I found out that the actual class material expands very little on what is already written on the syllabus. It's an almost complete blackbox approach to the algorithms, with just some explanation of what is going on.

Most of your time in this course will be spent watching someone call functions X, Y, Z from libraries A and B to run the algorithm of the week, at best with some intuition of what goes in the blackbox and what comes out. And if something goes wrong, you'll have no idea why.

TL;DR

Skip this one, just read the syllabus and google the algorithms or watch youtube videos about them.

Introduction to Apache Spark

More of a paid tutorial than an actual course. It's ok to say that the Spark approach is better than the alternatives, but it's just too much.

Other than that, the actual contents of the lectures are ok (although shallow), but quizzes are terrible and utterly irrelevant. They are there to make sure you paid attention to the videos and nothing else.

Setting up the development environment is overly complicated and probably the most challenging aspect of the class, which is frustrating. Didn't reach the point to get hands-on with Spark, since the notebook labs are very verbose and have everything, except code.

For now, I'll stick to tutorials on the web and the documentation, they seem to be the more promising than this course.
