One way or another, all employees are managed. But approaches to managing employees varying from employee-to-employee, job-to-job, manager-to-manager, organization-to-organization, and country-to-country. This course provides a foundation for developing your own approach to skillfully managing employees by illustrating alternative human resource management (HRM) strategies, introducing the importance of the legal context, and thinking about what motivates employees. This will then give you the factual and conceptual basis for developing specific, critical HRM skills in subsequent courses on hiring employees, managing performance, and rewarding employees. Don't know anything about HRM? That's OK! Leave this course with a new-found understanding of the range of options available for managing employees, a grasp of what makes workers tick, and the readiness to develop your own HRM skills.

Dear Professor Budd,

thank you very much for this excellent course indeed.

It will help me to fresh up my 19 years of HRM education and experience in my 35 Netherlands Army career and find an HRM job now that I am retired from the Army. That is why I signed up for all 5 of the courses in one package and this first course for sure did not disappoint me at all. Most of the content was already known to me from my HRM experience, but now I know the right civil HRM business language, which is different fro my Army Jargon. But I have also learned a few new things and I am…

Preparing to Manage Human Resources is an information rich module, and the content delivery by Professor John Budd was just brilliant. This was an enjoyable course but also an unexpected surprise. The information I gained from this module was more than I hoped for. I would recommend to other students that you allow a few more study hours than the recommended 4-5 hour per week, if you want to make the most out of this course. This is a five star course with out a doubt.

This course has been amazing. Dr. Budd fosters an atmosphere of belonging and inclusion, and he's super competent, accessible, and friendly. As a current practitioner of HR, looking to keep my knowledge up to date, I have been amazed at the quality content of this course and Dr. Bus's uncanny ability to teach very clearly. I recommend this course to anyone!

Excellent MOOC.

Comprehensive course, well taught by a Professor who clearly loves his job and his field of expertise.

The only detail I did not appreciate in this MOOC were the cartoon animations in the background that interfered with my focus especially when topics were a bit technical. But once again it's a detail.

This class did a really good job of providing a foundation. Taking this course actually helped me reach our to our HR team to address a particularly egregious management issue. And there is an exercise that was particularly helpful in pulling out the theoretical information the course addressed and put it into practice.

Professor Budd is insightful, funny but most importantly really is able to convey the important information that we need to manage teams effectively.

I enjoyed this class, as well as the class work. Thank you Professor Budd for keeping my interest and allowing me to learn some things I wasn't aware of!

I think that this is a great course for people that are just getting started in HR, and more, people who have managed people for a while. I think that people managers can get into a rut of how they manage people, and this is a good refresher that introduces HR-based concepts.

This course takes a three pronged approach to managing people, which I have never seen in any other course work I have pursued. As an experienced manager of people with over 25 years experience I would recommend this course to seasoned managers as well as new managers.

Prof. Budd is amazing. Please take this course who are new to this HR field to learn about the new way of looking things at HR.

The quizzes and assignments has really helped me a lot to improve and think the way the HR thinks. I am looking forward for the next chapter.

I would recommend it not only for HR beginners but to all HR practitioners who wants to update themselves. New HR insights are explained from different perspective - most students come from different countries with different HR practices.

This course is very beneficial if you want to learn more about HR. It gives you a broad overview of the field. Some of the laws mentioned do not apply in my country, but it is good to know what laws are implemented outside my country.
