Prerequisites

For this course, you require no previous knowledge of Excel. Basic knowledge of what Excel is and about it’s usage is preferred, but not necessary. In addition, some familiarity with other Microsoft Office programs is welcomed (Microsoft Word to start with), but also not a prerequisite. You just need to be comfortable with using a PC or MAC computer and have a basic knowledge on how files are organized, what are folders and directories. You will need MS Excel 2019 in order to perform the exercises in this course.

Intro to Excel Study Resources

For modules 4 to 8, students can exercise their learning in Labs. Each Lab consists of:

  • .xlsx file which represents data on which student is supposed to do the labs
  • PDF file with task of the labs explained and step-by-step instructions, and video in which the labs are explained and performed in full.
  • .xlsx files used as example in every module in videos and a PDF file of PowerPoint presentation used for this course.

First, students learn what Excel is used for, who needs it, and the limitations of the program. Students will also learn proofing and translation.

Then, the course moves on to the highly coveted formulas section. The course will teach students how formulas are entered, how to create basic math and text calculations, and how to look for errors in those formulas.

Next, students will gain an understanding of the types of files in Excel. This module will teach students how to create custom data types, create templates, and protect or hide sheets.

In the data tabs module, students will learn how to sort data using filters, how to group cells, create subtotals, consolidate data, and data validation.
