Overview

Discover inspiring ways to improve literacy using film

Recent research has shown film can be a powerful tool to help improve children’s reading and writing. It can also be used to develop a range of abilities - decoding, inference and analysis - as well as expanding creativity and improving vocabulary. In this online course, you’ll find out how you can help your students learn with film, with advice and insights from film education experts from the British Film Institute (BFI) and film education charity Into Film.

This course is designed for educators who would like to improve their student’s reading and writing, although parents or anyone with an interest in developing young people’s literacy will also benefit from the approaches that are explored throughout the course.

I learned a lot from and enjoyed this course. The content was great - using film and animation to support learning and making films. The use of film and animation was dealt with very thoroughly giving great insight into exactly how the shots, sound, plot, etc a,l work together and how to interpret and use these. I can see how this approach would support children's speaking and listening, reading, writing and use of digital tech tools. The last session, on film making, contained such useful and accessible ideas that would allow ,e to integrate film making into teaching whilst keeping a focus on the subject content.

The supporting resources were very attractive and useful. I feel sure that I will be using the resources and learning in my own teaching. The use of a community, posting comments and the use of a Padlet to share outcomes was a good feature, lots of people from varying contexts to learn from.

A very worthwhile course indeed.
