Contemporary organizations need to understand structured and unstructured data to generate insights to improve decision-making processes. Some topics will include data strategy and data governance; relational database systems; fundamentals of SQL; database design and management; data integration; master data management; and big data technologies.
In a competitive world where data is the new oil and information is distributed in platforms, it becomes fundamental for IT professionals to understand how data can be mined and organized to generate insights. Some topics covered in this course will include Excel’s Power Query add-in to get and transform data from external sources; data types and the implications of data types on analytical techniques; statistical measures to describe distributions; charts and graphs to visualize patterns within data; pivot tables, Excel tables, and advanced functions within Excel; Excel data model, KPIs, and Power BI tools; and business intelligence.
As technology becomes fundamental to implement strategic initiatives in modern organizations seeking digital transformation, understanding different aspects of managing technology projects and solutions becomes a high priority. Some topics covered will include blockchain and distributed trust; artificial intelligence and robotic process automation; business analytics and machine learning; managing IT investments and business applications; software development through agile approaches; organizational agility and business process redesign for digital transformation; and digital resiliency, information security, and risk management.

Syllabus

Courses under this program:
Course 1: Platform-Based Analytics

Gain hands-on experience extracting, preparing, exploring, and analyzing data statistically and visually using features and tools native to Microsoft Excel.

Course 2: Enterprise Data Management

Understand structured transactional data and known questions along with unknown, less-organized questions enabled by raw/external datasets in the data lakes. Topics include data strategy and data governance, relational databases/SQL, data integration, master data management, and big data technologies.

Course 3: Digital Technology and Innovation

Look at digital technology and innovation from the perspective of a chief information officer (CIO). Learn about Agile frameworks, cybersecurity and risk management, IT investments, and vendor management.

High-quality information is the key to successful management of businesses. Despite the large quantity of data that is collected by organizations, managers struggle to obtain information that helps them make decisions. While operational processing systems help capture, store, and manipulate data to support day-to-day operations of organizations, reconciled systems -- sometimes referred to as data warehouses or business intelligence (BI) systems -- support the analysis of data, thus, enabling decision making.

With the advent of big data systems, organizations have turned to enterprise data management frameworks to manage and gain insights from the vast amount of data collected. While storage costs themselves are relatively affordable, the bigger challenge has been finding an appropriate mechanism to manage the data as many technologies (e.g., relational databases, data warehouses) have limitations on the amount of data that can be stored.

This course focuses on realizing the business advantage and business potential of operational, reconciled, and big data systems as well as data assets in supporting enterprise data management strategies and enterprise data analytics.

In an ever-growing digital world, the need for strong data analysis skills is at the forefront of every business function, along with the ability to accurately describe and interpret analytical findings.

This course will center on foundational concepts of data analysis, tools for working with data, and strategies for communicating results by utilizing a hands-on teaching approach. Topics include approaching data sets with a critical eye, basic statistical and visual analysis, formatting visuals for interpretation, storytelling with data, and an introduction to spreadsheet modeling.
