Learn mindfulness techniques to reduce stress and improve performance

Stressed by the pace of modern life? Mindfulness might be the answer. Research shows that when you’re not deliberately paying attention to something, your brain goes into default mode causing increased anxiety and poor communication. Mindfulness can help end this unproductive behaviour. In this online course, you’ll learn how to incorporate mindfulness practices into your life, to reduce stress and improve your personal and professional life.

This course is for anyone, because everyone can benefit from mindfulness. No previous experience of mindfulness is required. We will explain how mindfulness works, but above all this is a practical course. We will ask you to explore different mindfulness techniques and reflect on your experience.

This course is not designed to be therapeutic for significant health problems so if you have any concerns in this regard then it is recommended that you speak to a suitably qualified health practitioner.

The theory to explain the science behind mindfulness was accessible and interesting and the practical tasks consolidated the learning and showed students how to apply this to our lives. I feel so empowered by what I learned from this course. Wonderful to have two charismatic leading academics who are also practitioners lead the course. The feedback videos at the end of the week were very useful, addressing any questions learners had. Can't say enough good things about this MOOC. It was extraordinary. Thank you to all involved.

This course is an excellent introduction to mindfulness. It has scientific evidence to back it up and although I approached it from a more spiritual side I really welcomed the scientific approach and I think this would suit a lot of people. I feel able to continue to practice mindfulness on my own but would definitely do this course again when it runs as a refresher. Excellent tutor, resources and I felt part of the learning community through discussion and comments online. I can't praise this course enough. I suffer from depression and anxiety and the course is helping me manage these better too.

Interesting and highly practical course, which was supportive in learners growing. Excellent material that was challenging, but attainable. Weekly feedback videos from lead educators answered questions learners had during the week. It's really changed my life for the better. Great course. Highly recommended. Thanks to everyone involved.

I have taken this course 6 times, and have registered to participate again. It is life changing and one of the best MOOCS I have studied. The course can be studied at different levels, with a wealth of additional material available.nThe two charismatic educators have pitched the course at the right level. They provide excellent meditations available for download. They also provide weekly feedback sessions. The moderators are extremely active in their support for learners. Finally the learners themselves provide a community of support for each other

I have completed several MOOCs on a variety of topics. This was by far the best in terms of course content, management, mentor interaction and facilitation from the two course leaders. Subsequently learner interaction was very high and there was no sense of learning remotely. I am a learning and development designer and I hold this course up as an exemplar on many levels.

For me personally it was a great experience. I learned a lot about mindfulness and benefitted from it greatly.

Without doubt the best MOOC I have taken. If you are receptive to the ideas and sound academic principles, this course could change your life. It is supportive, inclusive and led by two brilliant educators supported by mentors. Weekly feedback on YouTube responds to learners questions and comments as they have arisen that week. Cannot recommend highly enough.

Superb. Excellent material, presented with expertise, skill and - so important - compassion. In addition to the two educators, who gave extra weekly feedback videos, the course had the active and helpful involvement of two mentors.

An excellent course for anybody interested in the subject. It can be done at various levels as there is the chance to interact with other students but also to follow up other research papers and websites. It has given me the tools for lifelong access to that place of calm and peace, which as a Quaker I was already familiar with but this has added extra knowledge about how the brain works and how we physically react to stress, to note that in the body and to address it. It has also made me aware of the early signals of when I am getting anxious. I would highly recommend it - it could be a life saver and a life changer!

This is a really detailed and user-friendly course. I have done it twice over a two year period and many people do return to the course in order to refresh their commitment and practise or to support them continue mindfulness during life changes. In fact the learning community is a very big plus in this course as you do feel as though you are learning and practising as part of a community.

Another thing that I find quite unique about this course is the level of feedback and support of the online mentors and also the fact that the 2 main facilitators record real-time end-of week feedback in a youtube video that directly responds to questions and discussions that came up in the learners comments after each step.

I have just completed the October 2017 course and this is the first time that the original course is now being run as 2 slightly shorter courses with a 2 week break in between. I have found that the shorter length has meant that it has been easier to keep on top of the new learning and properly try out techniques and ideas discussed in the course - I am really looking forward to doing the next course soon.

Most of the time, however, I found the information either too mystical and not specific enough, or I lacked some scientific information.

This course has a very practical and academic approach to the topic of mindfulness, which is exactly what I needed.

It helps you understand the purpose of mindfulness, the goals, establish a practice and understand the process. It clears up any haziness around if you're doing it right or wrong and answers the common questions one might be asking him self when practicing meditation or mindfulness. This course has helped establish motivation to have a routine of daily mindfulness practice and also to implement it in everyday life.

I enjoyed this course and also the follow up and I will be redoing it again to strengthen what I've learnt and to participate even more in the discussions with other students.

I cannot recommend this course highly enough. It is run by Monash University in Australia and is one of the best courses I have done with FutureLearn. It is extremely well put together with high quality materials including videos of lectures, short quizzes, practical meditation sessions, links to many useful websites and documents and weekly feedback from the core educators who actually respond to what participants have contributed during the week.

It is possible to do 10 or 20 minutes per day and to just keep up to date or to put in hours if you wish. I found that a regular 20 to 30 minutes per day suited me. This would help people who know a little about mindfulness already or want to start from scratch with no previous experience. There is a strong sense of community and lots of supportive comments from other learners as well as the course mentors. Done well, this course is life changing as it can help with anxiety or depression, mental health problems and physical pain, efficiency at work and in the home, relationships and more.

I have followed this course several times and can highly recommend it. Craig and Richard, the course leaders, and mentors Jen and Sherelle, together with the rest of the team at Monash give us an insight into the concept of mindfulness and its benefits, combined with a gentle introduction to guided meditations, showing just how valuable this can be to our mental and physical wellbeing. Although it doesn't happen overnight, I can honestly say that following the course and even doing the minimum it recommends has made a significant difference to my ability to stay calm and controlled and to be generally nicer to be around with family and friends :-)
