Online learning is likely to be important for you in the future, either at university or in the workplace. Learning online is different to learning in the classroom as it requires different skills. This course will help you to develop those skills, showing you how to learn and communicate effectively in an online environment.

This course is just one of a series about ‘learning online’, which introduces you to the essential skills and tools you need to study effectively online.

This course is part of the Going to University collection which has been specifically designed for students at schools and colleges. They provide a taster of undergraduate study at the University of Leeds and help students to decide which subject to study at university.

Completion of the courses will also enhance students’ university applications.

The courses can also be used as a teachers’ classroom enrichment resource.

Courses in this collection are also great for people that want an introduction in the specific subjects discussed in each course.

A really useful introduction the subject. It highlights all the many different platforms out there for collaborating and weighs up the pros and cons of each. This helps the learner pick out what type of platform to use for different situations.

It also helps you see how to navigate the potential pitfalls of working in a team that whose members are distant from each other.

    Practical and enjoyable.

I am a total newcomer to all of this learning, and what’s known as a silver surfer but I intend during this time of pandemic to not fritter away my time but try to learn online. I know it will be difficult and although I followed this course and managed the quizzes I didn’t chat at all. Maybe next time I will be bolder, when I understand the IT more.
Thank you Leeds (I am a Loiner), you have helped me begin

  • I learnt nothing new, except the way the University of Leeds use technology and the social media to teach in its classroom, that's interesting, but for someone that is not interested to study at this place, this course is not so useful. The second part is a demo how to use some collaborative tools, like Gdocs or Padlet.

I would highly recommend it. Although you have some experience in online work, the course will allow you to discover tools you had never heard about, and pay attention to some details that just because they are obvious, seem to be forgotten in many occasions. It is also a practical course, so, perfect!

I have learnt immensely from the course based on the topics taught and what is expected of us to communicate with others in a bid to help create understanding. Equally, the etiquette required of each and every one of us which communicating online has well been articulated. That we should be cognisant of other feedback and how we respond or make comments so that we do not hurt others by our comments or otherwise.

I was surprised by the number of communication tools that are available, their variety and specificity. It's quite a whole new world for me. I think one important thing that I've learned among others is not to use local colloquialisms when interacting online with people from around the world. I tended to slip into phrases and expressions that might well not be familiar to those from other countries. I appreciate being reminded to apply netiquette especially when spontaneous emotions are triggered. I found the course helpful and educational.
