Syllabus

Welcome

Deflections and Statically Indeterminate Beam Structures
In this section, we will learn how calculate the deflections, or deformations, of engineering structures subjected to loads. We will then use those techniques is solving statically indeterminate beam problems

Column Buckling, Combined Loading, & Failure Theories
In this section, we will learn how to analyze and design for column buckling. We will also learn how to analyze and design engineering structures subjected to combined loading. Finally, we will conclude with failure theories in mechanics of materials.

What are MOOCs?
MOOCs stand for Massive Open Online Courses. These are free online courses from universities around the world (eg. Stanford Harvard MIT) offered to anyone with an internet connection.
How do I register?
To register for a course, click on "Go to Class" button on the course page. This will take you to the providers website where you can register for the course.
How do these MOOCs or free online courses work?
MOOCs are designed for an online audience, teaching primarily through short (5-20 min.) pre recorded video lectures, that you watch on weekly schedule when convenient for you.  They also have student discussion forums, homework/assignments, and online quizzes or exams.

I highly recommend the series of Mechanical Engineering courses offered by Dr. Whiteman. The courses are self contained if taken in order, and all the theorems given are developed in the class, no formulas are thrown at you, so you can understand where the formulas come from and how to apply them. There are well developed and relevant examples in the lessons, often taken from real life engineering problems. And Dr. Whiteman does an excellent job in presentation, often with live demonstrations so you can get a better feel of the explanations. The courses provide a solid introduction to mechanical engineering, and even if you have taken some ME, these are a good review. I have used what I learned here to study further engineering structures, for example, I am interested in the construction of Renaissance cathedrals, and applied what I learned to better understanding how they were built.

Dr. Whiteman is a very good teacher, he makes the complicated physics easy to understand and relate it with real life examples and equipment, which makes the class very interesting. I took all the four course in "Mechanics of Materials" and every and each of them is so great that I'd highly recommend them as a fundamental introduction course for those who are interested in mechanical engineering!

I highly reccomend all courses of Mr. Whiteman. He is an excellent teacher, with great experience in the subject. The courses are well structured with small but comprehensive modules. They helped me to recall basic principles from my university years and I really enjoyed the whole learning process.

I loved this course. Professor Whiteman is one of the best professors i've had a Georgia Tech. The flipped classroom setting is amazing in my opinion since more of the class time is spent applying the concepts we learn from the videos.
