Understanding Dementia is a brilliant course! I initially enrolled to enable me to better understand my father, who suffers from vascular dementia, and to ensure that he has the best care possible. I found the course so engaging, that my motivation for study became an intrinsic interest in the subject matter of dementia itself, as well as a way to help my father. The lectures are presented in an easily understood format, with helpful summaries at the end of each one. You may choose to watch the videos and/or the transcripts, but as some of the videos are quite outstanding, and are a wonderful adjunct to the learning process, they are well worth watching!

Exercises and quizzes will test your comprehension of the material, but are not assessed. The discussions are a way to get to know other students and to test your knowledge of the course material. I found Body Central one of the most useful learning techniques. This programmme tests your knowledge of the structures and functions of the brain, and is a very easy and fun way to learn this material. I doubt whether I could have learnt this material so easily, without this wonderful interactive learning tool.

This was my first experience of online learning, which I found superior to learning in a classroom. The teachers are wonderful and are extremely supportive. In fact, I was so impressed by Understanding Dementia, that I completed the subsequent course, Negotiated Study in Understanding Dementia, which is equally impressive; both courses are great fun, as well as very informative. I highly recommend Understanding Dementia to anyone, who has an interest in the subject. If you aren't especially interested when you start, I can almost guarantee that you will develop an interest in the subject of dementia by the end of the course!

The quizzes & test as well as the discussion were great & i found the lecturers & guest exceptional & really interesting...it was better & more fun than uni i think although that was years ago.

I am not working in the area but i found myself wishing that i was after accumulating all the knowledge. This was my first venture into online courses and it was an excellent one by Unit 2 i started another online course & i was able to keep up with them both. I am now looking for more subjects in MOOC perhaps photography?! I would love to do this i dont know if its offered.

Thank you for a well organised & thorough course.

I thoroughly enjoyed this course, especially the first half as I only had the basic knowledge of the function of the brain. I now will have confidence in explaining the technical details to those people who have been inflicted with this disease, many times a person will ask me what is wrong with me, why can't I work things out. Previously with one particular person, who frequently would ask me this question, I was able to give a brief overview, then she would say "thanks for that lecture, that helps". I often get asked the from Carers who have a spouse with Alzheimer's, what is going on and how can I cope with day to day activities. Now I can give them a more professional description of the function or the non-function of the brain. The last section of the course I enjoyed as I am very familiar and conversant with, as I have always had a passion for how to care and how a person with the disease SHOULD BE CARED FOR.

PLEASE- Could this course be compulsory for every carer who wishes to work in a Nursing Home. For the respect and dignity of every person who is suffering from this disease, they deserved to be cared for as any other person who is a resident in Aged Care Facilities. our Government needs to take a closer look at the education of employees working in Nursing Homes.

Thank You

I can't offer a suggestion as to how to improve it as the content was good. Maybe it was that it laboured a point too much. I can't put my finger on it unfortunately.

The other more helpful thing would be ongoing access to the videos or course notes. The ability to print out slides etc that were used. I have printed a lot of the video text to keep in a binder as course notes but other parts would be helpful as well where slides or diagrams were used.

The reference to other resources was excellent.

Overall a very good course. Enjoyed it!

I've learned so much more than the stereotypical information about dementia portrayed in the media. This should be compulsory for all immediate family members and followed up by medical practitioners staff to see that family have completed the course. Would save a lot of angst, might even bring families closer together.

I recently read a book provided by Alzeimers Assoc provided at my Mothers Aged Care Facility. It was far too basic, too wordy and would have been better to have many of the illustrated qu and answer imagery provided in your course.

Thank you for the course have learned so much.

Can now hope to improve the way I support my own Mother with Dementia.

This course is an excellent way to learn the basic knowledge re the structure of the brain, the pathology of various forms of dementia and the current pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches in the treatment of dementia. It was very helpful for my role as a Community Support Worker, considering that our roles means we the see aged clients in their homes and are some of the first to see and assist those with early onset dementia. It has given me the confidence to continue on the path of Community care and has also given me the impetus to continue to learn more.

Having the very learned and experienced team presenting the information in the MOOC and having a conversation with hundreds of other like minded people is a great way to feel that the learning is invaluable and that the view of others in varied fields of the medical profession as well as others who are experiencing the dementia path in some direct or indirect way is a very rewarding learning process.

This course was originally raised by my course leader when I completed my Certificate III in Aged Care/ Community Care and I am thankful for that direction given.

I felt I had a good understanding of Dementia as I worked in care homes for 20 years, but when my mum was diagnosed last year I felt out of my depth and needed to know more, this course helped me see it from the person with dementia's point of view in a way, As some statements I was saying to my mum and knew I shouldn't but not fully understanding why, for example when my mum would of said about being forgetful I would of said "ya sure we can all be forgetful"

It was interesting explaining from the beginning of how our brain worked and what happen when you had certain symptoms of Dementia.

I felt extremely overwhelmed by Gladys Wilson and Naomi Feil, of how a little patience, caring and knowledge reached out to find the person who was still inside, and about getting historical information for each individual to help with making them feel safe in any environment with sensory approaches which could help.

I personally feel that people with Dementia are looked at different from people with Cancer, and by doing this course, I have a better understanding of my approach to society and people with Dementia.

I liked the sequential way you are taken through Dementia.

The video's were more engaging than a book could ever be.

The MOOC slowly develops your knowledge, taking you through the physical, psychological and emotional changes.

It explains that while Dementia is a terminal illness with no cure it doesn't mean we can't, with care and support, enhance the lives of people with Dementia. It discusses the different ways that families, medical staff and carers can achieve this. It explores ways that society as a whole can learn to change to assist in this journey.

It gives you insight into the carers role, the place for medication and the place for alternative therapy's. It shows the way buildings and the environment impact on the person and all the time backing this up with research and the personal experiences of people in the actual situation of living with Dementia or caring for someone with Dementia.

The MOOC also provides material with which you can further your own knowledge and research with links to current articles and information.

I enjoyed engaging in learning again. The pace of the course was good for me. When it started I was on holiday in Japan for a month so it took me a little while to catch up.

NB The last question in the last quiz was ambiguous. During the course it was not spelt out what 'participating' meant when doll therapy was used. I took the statement to mean that all residents in residential care had to be engaged in the doll therapy. It didn't occur to me that 'participating' meant acceptance by family members etc. Remember the movie 'Lars and the Real Girl'.

I'm encouraged by developments such as involving people suffering with dementia in research projects and purpose built environments such as that being built in Holland and Tasmania.

In the section using alternative therapies especially memory therapies there was no mention of negative outcomes for people who may remember horrible times from the past - war, trauma, domestic violence for example.

Thank you for offering the course. I have learnt much and am optimistic about the future.

The course was very comprehensive, covering the brain, the diseases, and the person. The brain component covered the nervous system and how it works, the pathology and specific details on the causes of dementia. The diseases included the risk factors for dementia, the difference between normal ageing and dementia and the areas in which the person with dementia experiences change in i.e. , cognitive, physical function, behavioral and psychiatric. The stages of dementia were discussed and the role of medical management.

The person component looked at behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia and how to manage these; pain and dementia and advanced dementia symptoms and management including palliation. The conclusion looked at dementia friendly communities, dementia inclusive design and alternative therapies. The additional resources, links and YouTube clips were very informative and useful. Overall very interesting and highly recommended.

I believe this course is of an excellent standard. To complete the course you will need to use your computer on a regular basis to complete the tasks in a required time frame. However as it is such a user friendly course and the content is interesting and presented in layman's terms it is not unusual to find yourself achieving more than you expect in one setting. The 3 topics: the brain. the diseases and the person give a very well researched and broad outline of the dementia journey and it's complexities. It includes many examples of personal experiences and it is presented in a very respectful and kind way. It is a timely course as dementia is so prevalent in our society ow and within only a few years will be a very serious concern for all of us. This free course is extremely worthwhile for anyone in the aged care sector, anyone who has parents and anyone who is themselves of a mature age. I highly recommend this course.

This MOOC has been a great journey. My father has been diagnosed with dementia and to be honest, I didn't know much about it. I do know that there is a huge stigma around dementia and up until completing this course, I would have been part of the 'ignorant' majority, but I have learnt so much and have changed a lot of my beliefs (albeit uneducated beliefs) about the condition. One thing that has remained unchanged though is that I still believe dementia to be a very cruel and relentless disease. 'Cure' is maybe an unrealistic fantasy, but the quicker we can get to 'termination' and 'prevention' the better off our ageing family members around the world will be.

This UTAS MOOC Course Understanding Dementia is a must for anyone who is involved with elderly people or works in aged care. This means most of us as we nearly all have family members who fit into this category. Not only does the course give us valuable information on the brain, the diseases that contribute to dementia and case studies of real lives, it helps to dispel some of the stereotypes and myths that abound in our society and looks to the future of how we can create a more dementia -friendly society that supports the person and the family. This is my first online course and I found it fascinating. Thanks you so much for this opportunity!

I learned much and in addition was stimulated to discover more and to keep on seeking too.

I especially found Irene Jacob's interview helpful.( not sure if that's her name) and was excited by the progressive outlook of many of the contributors.I was enthralled by Gary Small and have his book in the attempt to keep my husband well as long as I can.

I will always hold Prof. McIrney's voice, calm compassion and warmth in my head. She's such a great asset.

Thank you Mooc.

The quiz's throughout the MOOc are not difficult and just recap what you have learned (you can have 3 attempts to get them right if you need to).

An added bonus was 27 CPD points for my nursing education requirements for this year.

I am looking forward to the next MOOC next year Preventing Dementia

I am not disappointed. As an online course I am most taken with it and would go out of my way to recommend it to any one wanting to learn how much there is to learn about dementia. This must be one of the most relevant educational opportunities available - and it's freely shared. The content, pace is all consistent with the messages and information being conveyed and the process is reflective and inclusive. Engaging with electronic learning is not scary when courses are so well designed and presented as this.

A huge thank you.

I am unsure how people like her can be a professor in a modern university. Please be wary of courses like this, which present so-called experts who actually are not regarded as leaders in their field. It seems that anyone with a PhD and a penchant for self-promotion can call themselves MOOC experts these days.

The course was tailored around people who may want to do an online course but worried about navigating the computer, asking for help, support for extra tube! All this the university provides as well as the excellent knowledge of its staff. Very highly recommended.

I found this such a helpful course. I was learning for personal reasons. My mother had MND and her behaviour and personality underwent huge changes. Only 15% of MND patients are diagnosed with Frontotemporal Dementia. My mother was in that number. This course helped me to understand what was happening and helped me cope with the changes. Thank you.

The course was very informative, I like the fact that it's online and the youtube videos to support material.

Perhaps consider making the timeframe for completion a bit longer to accommodate those who work and have other demands.

I would have loved to see more things visually to support what is discussed if possible and where possible.
