edX: Statistics for Business - II

with  Ishita Kumar and Shankar Venkatagiri

Statistics is a versatile discipline that has revolutionized the fields of business, engineering, medicine and pure sciences. This course is Part 2 of a 4-part series on Business Statistics, and is ideal for learners who wish to enroll in business programs. The first two parts cover topics in Descriptive Statistics, whereas the next two focus on Inferential Statistics.

Spreadsheets containing real data from diverse areas such as economics, finance and HR drive much of our discussions.

In Part 2, we use the language of probability to examine the underlying distributions of random variables. We model real-life phenomena using known variables such as Binomial, Poisson and Normal. We learn how to simulate data that are distributed according to these variables.

We shall take up datasets that have over a million rows, which makes it difficult to analyze using a spreadsheet. This is a natural setting for R, an advanced statistical programming platform. We incorporate helpful tutorials to get learners acquainted with the platform.

What are MOOCs?
MOOCs stand for Massive Open Online Courses. These are free online courses from universities around the world (eg. Stanford Harvard MIT) offered to anyone with an internet connection.
How do I register?
To register for a course, click on "Go to Class" button on the course page. This will take you to the providers website where you can register for the course.
How do these MOOCs or free online courses work?
MOOCs are designed for an online audience, teaching primarily through short (5-20 min.) pre recorded video lectures, that you watch on weekly schedule when convenient for you.  They also have student discussion forums, homework/assignments, and online quizzes or exams.

QM101.2x is the second course on statistics in the series of 4 courses offered by IIMBx. If you have a fairly good understanding about descriptive statistics and on using excel sheets for processing data sets (eg: functions like vlookup, pivot tables etc) and computing measures of central tendencies, dispersion etc, then you can directly start learning this course. Otherwise, it is better to first complete or at least audit QM101.1x before enrolling for this course to fully realize the benefits. QM101.2x covers more ground on descriptive statistics and statistical distributions like Normal, Poisson and how these can be used to process huge data sets using R in the business context. The exercises and case-lets will help you to get a fairly good grasp of the basics of R programming, make you aware of the power of the R platform in processing huge data-sets viz-a-viz excel and create in you, a desire to learn R in greater depth. The videos are of high quality. No doubt, Prof Shankar Venkatagiri and team have put in a lot of efforts to create this wonderful course. It is a pleasure to learn. Anyone who wants to acquire data analysis skills will find it very useful. I would highly recommend this course to students and practicing executives.
